There are hundreds of thousands of frustrated writers hanging around the internet, trying to sell their e-books on Amazon, or maybe doing a gig here and there on Fiverr, even writing some content for a website or two. Are you one of them? These writers are selling their work, but they sure aren’t making a ton of cash. So, is it possible for you to make substantial money writing online? The short answer to that is yes.
There’s a well-known method that many people have discovered and it’s called affiliate marketing. Okay. I saw you roll your eyes there. But, hear me out.
It’s Simple Writing – But It’s Still a Challenge!
I always thought I was a fairly good writer, not great but able to get my message across at least. But when I came across this program it really put whatever writing skills I had to the test.
Normally when I would sit down to write, the words would just flow. The problem of watching the cursor blink on a blank Word document usually wasn’t an issue for me. It wasn’t an issue until I joined the Wealthy Affiliate program.
I quickly came to realize that in the past I was mainly writing for myself. I wasn’t writing to try and reach someone, to communicate with them, to demonstrate why a certain product or service would make their lives better.
And I’m not talking about exclusively writing ad copy, although you can use some of those methods here, too. Copywriting is a unique writing skill unto itself, and it is a skill, make no mistake about it.
This is What I’m Talking About
The writing path I’m excited about is done on a website by the name of Wealthy Affiliate. More accurately, Wealthy Affiliate teaches you how to create your own website in order to create wealth. I know, I know. There are other people pushing this website to the max all over the internet. And, you know why? It works!
Wealthy Affiliate has helped literally thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs get their websites up and running, writing about whatever gets them excited, promoting affiliate links and making money. For me personally, writing about what interested me was my main goal – but to make a passive income to boot? Cha-ching.
There are some major differences when comparing Wealthy Affiliate to other affiliate programs though.
You see, with this program you are not just throwing up a website, then cut and pasting affiliate links up there and crossing your fingers, hoping someone clicks on them and makes you a $5.00 commission.
With their approach it’s the power of your writing and communication that creates organic website traffic and affiliate conversion. You are building an audience, and you’re getting their attention by writing about your interests and passions. (I know – that word “passion” gets thrown about way too much. Aren’t you glad I haven’t told you to take “massive action” yet? I’ll leave that up to Tony Robbins. He really likes those words.)
You can write to your heart’s content about any subject you want on your own website or blog. Whatever topic or niche you want to write about, it’s up to you. You can even write about writing if that’s your main love.
How It’s Done, In a Nutshell
The method the founders of Wealthy Affiliate recommend is the best way to make affiliate commissions. Their approach is not a “get rich quick” scheme, but a solid foundation for consistent affiliate earnings. In order to do this you need to:
- Build a website, which they walk you through;
- Create content rich in relevant keywords, and then add the appropriate affiliate links;
- Build traffic and trust, and become the authority in your niche;
- Then your site visitors will click on your affiliate links and purchase the item of interest;
- And – drum roll please – you get a reward for sending people to purchase something they wanted anyway and you’re not giving them the hard sell.
Sounds simple – right? In theory it is, but in practice it can be complex and frustrating. There are many people out wandering around the interwebs trying to figure out this affiliate stuff. I know. I was one of them.
But then I stumbled upon Wealthy Affiliates, and am I glad I did.
Multiple Methods of Generating Traffic – The More the Merrier!
When you use your writing skills and build trust, you build traffic. And when you couple that with other methods of promoting your website or blog you have a potential powerhouse of income generating traffic that others just can’t compete with.
Wealthy Affiliate teaches you how to use SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. They keep on top of what search engines like Google and Bing are looking for when ranking websites on the first page of search results, and they also know what those search engines DON’T like. For instance, some of the old, gimmicky things other affiliate training courses will try and teach you, like keyword “stuffing.”
Stuffing is a big no-no and the search engines know about it, can detect it, and will punish you for doing it by putting you on page 55 of search results. Sorry, but no one is going to look on page 55 for your website. Keywords are key; keyword stuffing is no good.
That’s just one small but important example of the insights Wealthy Affiliate has when aiming you towards high ranking search results on the big search engines. Economy in keyword use may seem like a small thing, but it has big results.
Wealthy Affiliate also teaches you about how social networks can help promote your website, and they do so in a way that’s easy to understand. They also talk about YouTube advertising, Google Adsense, and more. See, there is a lot to this affiliate marketing business. And Wealthy Affiliate is the top dog when it comes to explaining it all.
What Wealthy Affiliate Offers That the Others Don’t
There are other companies out there that offer guidance and lessons on how to do affiliate marketing. But do they offer these features?
- Step-by-step training for building your WordPress blog or website on the SiteRubix platform.
- Jaaxy – One of the best keyword search tools I’ve ever seen.
- A 1,000,000 images aggregator to spice up your sites with photos.
- Live chat going on constantly where you can ask any question and get help.
- Weekly live video classes and hours of video replay of those classes.
- A huge community of like-minded people ready and willing to help you.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much on offer here, and it’s a massive website. The founders put over $2.5 million into building this robust website, and it shows.
This site is an active, global, fun community. You will see lots of positivity and very little negativity here, and there is always someone who has already worked through the exact same problem or question that you may be concerned with.
You don’t have to submit a question and hope someone gets back to you (maybe) 12 hours or a day later. Because this is a global community and it seems like there are members active ‘round the clock.

Remember the Free Membership is Just an Introduction
Using the “tip of the iceberg” analogy again, that is exactly what you see when you get the free membership. Some new members, when they first come to the site with their free membership and barely look around the site, complain that Wealthy Affiliate is a bait and switch set up. Or, Wealthy Affiliate is a scam. Wealthy Affiliate is a ripoff. (How can it be a ripoff when you’ve paid nothing?) When in reality nothing could be further from the truth.
What Wealthy Affiliate is, is a training platform with tons of info and tools to help you create your own successful online business. You don’t get that for free. Are people making money writing blogs? On Wealthy Affiliate they are. Can people make money writing reviews? On Wealthy Affiliate they can!
Think of this as an education. Have you ever heard of a university or even a community college offering you an education for free? Nope. Credits cost bucks, and you add up credits to get your degree to the tune of thousands of dollars.
Sign up for the free membership (two websites are included in this), look around, talk to people on the live chat and decide for yourself. And then, when you want to get serious about learning and have access to ALL the details, take the next step.
Do the month-to-month: $19 for the first month and then $59 per month after that. Or, $359 annually (that’s $199 savings over month-to-month plan). This includes the hosting of your websites. Actually 50 websites if you are super ambitious. I will qualify this though and tell you that if you want a .com URL you have to buy that yourself, usually $13.99 for the year and then it’s yours, all yours. No one else can have it – no one! And this process is one that the lessons walk you through. Easy peasy.
Can you imagine getting a college degree for that much? I’ve paid more than that for a single class and the required book and materials at a community college, and of course even more at a state college. We’re not even going to talk about private colleges, ‘cause they are very spendy. $359 is nothing by comparison. Invest in your future and put in the time and effort to build yourself an online business!
My Personal Pursuit of an Internet Marketing Education
I just have to add this personal note at this point. At 62-years old I’ve paid way more than this in the pursuit of trying to create a business online. Classes, programs, books, website hosting and all the little extra things they charge you for (which are included in the Wealthy Affiliate platform) – you name it I’ve tried it. I don’t even want to think about how much I’ve spent over the years, and I wish I’d found Wealthy Affiliate sooner.
I signed up with one company (which shall remain nameless) for their introductory $99 class, and then after sharing a little information, they tried to sell me on their $17,750 master course! That’s Seventeen Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty Dollars. Holy cow! They went from $99 to $17,750. That’s quite a leap of faith for anyone who bought the program. And the funny thing was, they actually had people sign up for this just on the strength and promise of their introductory course. To be honest with you, there was nothing in their introductory course to convince me that they had information to teach that I couldn’t find elsewhere. Especially for that amount of money. That’s just crazy talk.
But, back to the point I was making. Wealthy Affiliate is the real deal. Without question the value for the money is just outstanding. And Kyle and Carson (the founders) have not increased the cost of the premium membership for 12 years! That’s unheard of in the world of online courses that are this extensive and in-depth. Oh, I take that back. They raised the price of month-to-month from $47 a month to $49 a month in 2016. A $2 per month increase over 12 years. Wow. I can’t imagine they’ll continue to offer these low membership prices forever and I’m glad I got in now.
